Top 10 Vintage "must follow" Instagrammers

I love my phone. It's my TV, my camera, my computer. But most importantly, it's my social media fix! So if you're appy and you know it (couldn't help myself) then get yourselves over to Instagram land and follow these vintage loving beauties for retro inspiration. Oh and of course, these are in no particular order as they're all so very different!

@andibgoode is already firmly on our blogger radar but her vintage obsession covers much more than clothes. Check out her vintage barbie doll collection too!

@diablorose is one of our favourite Vintage Fair hair stylists fromn Le Keux events. She documents her own hair styles pretty much everyday and it's getting a little stalker-like at my end...!

@laneway_esme is another coloured hair beauty! How could you not want to look at all of this absolutely gorgeous lady's hairstyles and outfits? May I add that she has a particularly pretty cat?

@fleurdeguerre Now I know I bang on about this woman, but there's a reason why! She's an all round good vintage egg and also runs like the wind with uber cool running club Run Dem Crew.

@GRLSTOLEVINTAGE The Queen of mixing the high street with vintage, Miss Lereese Atkinson of GIRLSTOLE. You'll be hearing more about this young lady very soon on our blog. But if you love #ootd and small dogs then you'll thoroughly enjoy her instagram feed.

@classicbeauties clog up my feed with rare and beautiful photos of famous faces from the 20th Century. They often come with insightful stories about the woman in question. Every day is a school day!

@misskittyboo has the best glasses and the best fringe I ever did see. Complete vintage sci-fi geek with a penchant for Buffy The Vampire Slayer and 50s glamour. Mates with Andi B Goode no less.

@marinaandthesummerday is a new find for me. If you love a classic pinup, rockabilly look then this sassy lady is the one for you to start following.

@swallowsanddamsons hail from Sheffield and are widely considered one of the very best florists in the region. Her carefully considered bouquets are commonplace at only the most elegant weddings and coolest shops and cafes. Perfect inspiration follow.

@thevintagefair Last but not least (if we do say so ourselves) you should definitely follow us! We will be taking photos of all the best bits from our fairs as they happen just in case you can't get down to our event on the day. And looking at this pic from our Southampton Vintage Fair, you can see why we wouldn't want you to miss out!

What's your Instagram and why should we follow you?

The Southampton Vintage Fair: Blogger Challenge

Well, well, well! We are absolutely shattered after a storming weekend down south in Southampton and Bournemouth with The Vintage Fair. But you hear enough about us championing our fairs (well, they are fab) so we thought we'd give one very lovely fashion blogger £50 to spend in Southampton so she could show you just what we have to offer. Meet Emily from Lab Geek Chic.

Hello vintage darlings!

What a Saturday I have had! A Saturday packed with gorgeous little things, vintage treats and all round bygone glamour at Southampton vintage fair. The lovely people that run the fair had a little challenge in
store for me: to find and style a vintage look for £50. Now, being that I got to keep the whole ensemble, this was quite naturally my favourite kind of challenge!

I was so taken in by all the beautiful things that it was only after thirty minutes of compulsive rummaging that I actually stepped away from the clothes long enough to become aware of what an amazing setting I was
in. The fair is held in Southampton Guildhall which is such a perfect venue for bringing a bit of grandeur to any drizzly Saturday afternoon. However, soon I was once again quite perfectly lost in my little treasure
hunt. One of the most exciting things about this challenge was the opportunity to try something I wouldn’t normally go for, I’m the sort of girl that generally can’t be torn away from twirling skirts and dresses but
today I found myself drawn to a particular pair of shorts. Styled a bit like tap shorts and recycled from a damaged fifties dress they lured me in; then when I found the silk lining I knew they had to be mine. Next up I had to find a shirt and the Laura Ashley cream silk blouse that materialised from a packed rail was simply too lovely to ignore. At only ten pounds it's not only lovely but also my bargain of the day and it had a
wonderfully early 1900s feel to it. To finish the look I chose an elegant black velvet purse complete with a delicately embroidered peacock. Whilst the selection of items I chose came from a range of eras I wanted
the overall feel of the outfit to reflect my love of late twenties sophistication and opulence but with a modern twist, but I’ll leave the success of that for you to decide.

Challenge complete I couldn’t resist the temptation of a few little luxuries and it was a 1940s silk kimono embroidered with flowers and birds from Pretty in Vintage that caught my eye first. I’m wearing it as I
write this and let me tell you: it is just divine! It makes me think of those perfectly turned out 1940s film stars sat preening at their dressing tables surrounded by ornate perfume bottles. Speaking of film stars this
brings me to my second little luxury which is a peach coloured silk girdle from the 1930s that once belonged to a french actress. It is so soft and the tailoring is sublime – every bit as exquisite as pieces from favourite
modern lingerie designers like Agent Provocateur if not more so! That’s all for today but thanks for reading and I hope you had as much fun at the fair as I did!

Kimono from Pretty in Vintage
(£65) and peach silk girdle from
Mabel’s customised and vintage
clothing (£25).

Forties Floozy Giveaway Winner Reports In!

We love to spoil you! And we also love to find out about our vintage fans, bloggers, traders, lovers alike. So we are really happy to share this product review from The Forties Floozy who won our latest giveaway of a Besame Violet Powder. They say it brightens up your complexion, well, does it? We hand over to vintage blogger Miss B. (Oh and go and check out the rest of her posts, girls got style!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,
Today I had a lovely present arrive from the lovely people at The Vintage Fair.  Through their Blog I won something that I have been hankering after for quite some time now.

The Besame Brightening Violet Powder

One of my favourite things about vintage reproduction (particularly cosmetics) is the packaging.  It makes everything that little bit more magical.

Hopefully this will give you some perspective of size.

And the little powder puff that it comes with is equally stylish.

As the picture above shows the powder comes with one of those little lids with the holes in it to stop you getting covered in the stuff.  In fact I find these ‘aids’ the most irritating things in the world.  I sat for 5 mins attempting to shake, wiggle and tease some powder out of the pot before finally giving up and tugging the offending item off the powder tub.
As soon as I’d done this I began to enjoy the product (if a little more carefully than before).  I tried using the puff but it is quite small and I didn’t want to dirty it so I turned to my usual powder brush.  It glided over my skin and even after 3 hours of wearing it, my skin still feels fresh and smooth.  A success!
And now I’m going to burn out your retinas with some before and after pics.  It’s not often I’m seen without make up so I please don’t take offence.

Please excuse the headscarf, I've got my pin curls in underneath.

After!
After!

This is what the website claims that it does: Brightening Violet Powder is a translucent loose powder that adds just a hint of brightness for an instant lift to any complexion. Sets make-up beautifully and leaves a soft matte finish. The powder does not contain shimmers, but brightens because of the unique violet hue in this special formula. Deliciously fragrant, it suits any skin tone. Wear alone, over foundation or to add a lightness to tired eyes and under eye circles.
If I’m honest, I think they’ve got it spot on.  My skin feels incredible and it smells damned good too.  It does give a much nicer finish than my normal powder and it gives  a really even coverage without it being obvious where you have and haven’t applied it.

The other make up I’m wearing is as follows:

I am eternally grateful to the lovely people at The Vintage Fair for doing such a competition.  At £22 I wouldn’t be able to afford it without it being a truly amazing product.  I think it is, I’m going to have to save up in future to afford it but I don’t think I’ll turn back.  It’s just too perfect.
That’s all for now folks!

Miss B xoxo

The Bright Young Twins

"I think me and Harriet lead lives that people wouldn't expect us to..."

Photo: Katie Holt

The The Bright Young Twins are Harriet and Aimee; two young beautiful women who describe themselves as "vintage creeps with questionable tastes". You can probably understand already, having looked at the image above and read this brief introduction, as to why I wanted to talk to these girls!

How did it all start?
H: It was your idea!
A: I suppose it was my idea, but we've both been reading blogs for some time and I thought 'come on let's do it!' We just decided that, we wear a lot of outfits anyway and since we read so many blogs we figured by writing our own we could 'give something back'.
H: We took so much inspiration from the people we followed on the internet that we felt we could inspire other people to do what those people did for us.

Are there any blogs in particular that you regularly read?
H: Confessions Of A Female Drag Queen has to be our favourite, (A: Oh yeah we love that girl!) Stella Rose is just amazing.
A: Oh and Fashion Forestry and Hannah and Landon are two blogs we love. But the blogs we read have dramatically changed over the past two years. We just read so many! Ooh! Fairy Fay has just launched her blog, she's our housemate and has this gorgeous 60s Rolling-Stones-girlfriend thing going on with her long hair, she's really cool.

Did you expect Bright Young Twins to take off like it has? You have 991 blog followers!
A: I know! I don't think either of us expected it to take off no, the first three months were just like, our mums, nans and friends reading it!
H: I nearly gave up, it got to the point where I felt we were giving and giving and getting nothing back. The whole point was to share stuff and we weren't getting the feedback, I'd wear an outfit and then think "what's the point in photographing it if nobody's going to appreciate it?" But then we got featured on the Swedish blog Miriam Kafferep and on Casey's Elegant Musings and it just went from there.
A: We also started going to parties like Blitz Party and the Chap Ball where we met other established bloggers like Fleur De Guerre which we were really chuffed about as she said she read our blog.

I don't see your blog as a "fashion blog" as you offer so much of yourselves to your readers. Was this a conscious effort?
H: Originally we were very much hoping to make the blog about historical garments and dating particular pieces and in depth posts on vintage styles but nobody read those posts! (But you can still find those in our archive). We looked at the blogs we read and why we like reading them and it's because they are about that person as much as they are about the clothes they wear.
A: Definitely, like I think Harriet's right when she says there's an element of voyeurism with blogs. I think me and Harriet lead lives that people wouldn't expect us to.
H: People seem to expect us to live a certain way, not to swear and be good girls! but we are not trying to re-live a certain decade. We just want to show how passionate we are about the fashions from those eras and how that fits into our very modern lives.
A: We are very much feminists and that's something we wanted to stress in our blog. People have this idea that women who wear vintage are expected to carry the morals along with that time, which is ridiculous!

Do you think living in London gives you a greater freedom to dress the way you do?
H: I think I would dress this way no matter where I lived, but I love this city. It has an impact due to the fact we have access to so much more.
A: There's never a point where we would change our style to suit our surroundings, we dress the same no matter where we go.

Give us some London tips, shops, drinking or otherwise.
H: We love Spitalfields on a Thursday. It's definitely our favourite place to shop. We love charity shops but if we told you our favourite charity shops then we wouldn't get all the best stuff! And Paper Dress too - clothes and booze!
A: We love bad bars. The irony is coming out now! We just love how the weirdest people would try and chat us up. But now we love parties...so Harriet's flat.

Harriet, you and flowers! When are these gorgeous floral hair pieces going to be available to buy?
H: ...definitely by Spring next year?! I've just started working in a florists' so it's pretty tiring getting up at 5am everyday but yeah, I love flowers. I'm just lazy!
A: That's exactly it! People follow us more for Harriet's style, but if it wasn't for me then the posts wouldn't even happen!

Aimee, congrats on graduating in English Literature! Has that been a big inspiration for your style?
A: I would say so, yes. I only started wearing dark red lipstick because of all the women in Dracula with their big plush lips not because of the magazines!

Dressing certain ways attracts attention. Have you found this and how do you react to the extra attention?
H: In Berlin a couple of years ago, we were stood next to the Brandenburg gate and people were taking pictures of us instead of the famous monument right next to us! We were like, "It's over there!"
A: It's not very nice. Harriet hates it and I don't like it very much either.
H: I have a strong opinion on the whole thing. Why can't people leave each other alone? I'm not a freak show. I may think that I think somebody dresses awfully but never in a million years would I think I had the right to tell them!
A: I suppose on the other hand, I've just come to expect it and accept it. You just have to deal with it.
H: I actually feel sorry for people. It's like, my hat is blowing your mind right now, it's a hat!

It was an absolute pleasure to meet the Bright Young Twinskeep up to date with all of their latest posts as they get up to goodness knows what wearing goodness knows what!
